The Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division (NAWCWD), a division within the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR), is the largest tenant of Naval Air Weapons Station (NAWS) China Lake and is the Navy’s full-spectrum Research, Development, Test, and Evaluation (RDT&E) Center of Excellence for weapons systems associated with air warfare, aircraft weapons integrations, missiles and missile subsystems, and assigned airborne electronic warfare systems.
The P-1904 Michelson Laboratory Complex Consolidation is located on the Main side of NAWS China Lake. The Michelson Laboratory Complex houses assets that provide RDT&E critical for the development of cutting-edge weapons systems for the Department of the Navy. The project provides replacement space for specialty functions as well as consolidation of related activities into modern and efficient facilities. The project includes constructing three (3) new facilities to provide advanced prototype machining in support of in-house development projects, environmental testing of fleet assets and developmental systems. The facilities include an Industrial Shop, Environmental Laboratory and a Chemistry Laboratory for advanced materials research and development. The Industrial Shop, Environmental, and Chemistry missions are required to be in the Michelson Laboratory Complex for close proximity to the programs they support.
The Michelson Laboratory Wings 06 and 07 Renovation project RM19-1867 involves the complete renovation and adaptive reuse of Wings 06 and 07, and their corresponding basements, to repair structural and non-structural damage caused by the July 2019 earthquakes. Wing 06 must provide office and lab space for Airborne Instrumentation Systems Department (AISD). This AISD lab space must with RF shielding and as a secure ICD-705. Wing 07 must provide the composites prototyping program spaces to support Research, Development, Test, and Evaluation (RDT&E) teams for advanced weapons and weapons systems. The project scope is based on Unified Facilities Code(UFC) 2-000-05N Facility Planning for Navy and Marine Corps, and direction from NAWS China Lake. Michelson Laboratory (Building 00005) is located east of Argus Street and south of Nimitz Avenue (Figure 1.1). The project scope includes the area shaded in blue and purple, which is the site for this project: Wing 06 in blue for AISD and Wing 07 in purple for Composites to the west of the building’s main spine, extends west in an east-west orientation along Nimitz Avenue.
